Faith - The Most Precious Currency of all!
1 Peter 1:6-7 So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while.
These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold. – though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. (NLT)
Have you ever gone hiking? I grew up in Switzerland, the land of high mountain peaks. Hiking was something you did almost daily. Just going to school for some kids was half a hike.
Even though I loved the challenge, sometimes it was a bit of a push to reach the goal. Especially if the weather was acting up and you weren't ever sure whether the sun was shining for good now or you needed to keep the rain coat handy.
However, each time I forgot about the trials that might come with my journey and I just focused on the goal ahead, I got new energy. If I just imagined the magnificent view I would get to enjoy once I am at the mountain top, my feet got wings.
You see, your walk with the Lord can feel like climbing a mountain at times. You have to push through and endure some challenges. But as Peter says here, if you focus on the wonderful joy ahead, enduring the trials is nothing.
In fact, he tells us to be truly glad and push on through for what lies ahead is greater than what you will endure.
What You Have is Genuine
He goes on in verse 7 to show us why we should be truly glad and keep the goal ahead in mind. He says, "These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold - though your faith is far more precious than mere gold."
I don't know about you, but there is something about reaching a goal that you were aiming for. When you plan for that goal and persevere through the trials, you get a sense of accomplishment inside of you that is just precious.
Whenever I managed to complete a hike and enjoy the view at the top, I knew that all the pushing through was worth it. I realized that my efforts were truly genuine because I persevered and as a result I got to see this most gorgeous view.
It is the same with your faith. As you focus on the goal ahead and take on each challenge, you will know that what you have inside of you is genuine. It is not something fake or something you just say you have because that is the right thing to do. No, it will be yours, because you pushed through to the goal and climbed to that mountain top successfully.
Faith is More Precious Than Gold
Peter goes on to take this even a step further and says that faith is even more precious than mere gold. That is quite the comparison. Gold is a rare metal that is very precious. When you have gold you are considered wealthy. So faith is more precious than even the greatest possession we could ever have in this natural world.
This makes me desire to have it. Can you imagine having something in your life that is worth more than even gold? Isn't that worth enduring some trials for?
Also consider how hard it is to actually get gold. Those gold miners of old worked long and hard just to even dig up an ounce of it. You and I have access to something that is more precious than that.
Well, guess what? You have access to it, but you have to do some digging. You have to be glad to endure some trials. As you do, you will receive it. As you push through the trials and allow the fire to come, you will have pure faith in your heart and that is greater than any earthly treasure.
Receive Praise, Honor and Glory
It gets even better. Once your faith has gone through the fire and you have endured through all the trials, you stand strong. Not only that, but you will reap good fruit. It will bring praise, honor and glory.
Those are all things that you love striving for. Let's be honest here. How often do you work yourself sick just because you want your boss to sing you praises? How often do you push beyond the call of duty so somebody could lift you up and give you glory for what you did?
You strive and travail and at the end you are left empty handed. You are rich for one second and then it vanishes away just like a gust of wind.
However, you can be rich! You can put in the right amount of effort, possess the most precious thing in this world and even have praise, honor and glory for it.
I don't know about you, but when I look at it this way, I am ready for some trials. When I look at it this way, then I realize that God has given me so much. If I could just be glad and look forward in joy to what He has for me, then the trials along the way really wouldn't matter.
I would know that no matter how difficult my life might get, it doesn't matter because at the mountain top I will reap good fruit. It wouldn't matter because I would have in my heart the one thing that truly makes me rich – faith.
So in conclusion, stop complaining about your circumstances and start being glad. Look at the goal ahead and press on forward. For the trials will show you that what you have inside of you is genuine and strong. As you push on through, you will soon have a heart that is filled with the most wonderful thing ever - faith.
Then, when faith has come and made you rich, the Lord will add even more to it. Faith is the beginning of a wonderful relationship with the Lord. Without faith, it is impossible to please Him... but that's another study altogether.
For now, climb your mountain, receive faith and let the Lord meet the deep needs in your heart through it.
